El prototipo funciona con hidrógeno y pilas de litio por lo que por su tubo de escape solo emite vapor de agua. Alcanza los 129 kilómetros por hora y tiene una autonomía nada menos que de 400 kilómetros. “El black cab [el tradicional taxi negro] es un icono londinense muy querido, pero también es una importante fuente de polución sobre todo en el centro de la ciudad“, comentó Kit Malthouse, vicealcalde político de Londres y presidente de la Asociación del Hidrógeno londinense. El nuevo prototipo es el resultado de un trabajo en equipo. Lotus Engineering es responsable de todo el sistema de propulsión, incluyendo el motor de la célula de combustible de Intelligent Energy y el diseño del sistema de control para optimizar el rendimiento tanto de la célula de combustible como del sistema eléctrico. TRW Conekt ha encabezado el programa de análisis de seguridad, incluyendo los sistemas de frenado y dirección, y la London Taxis International Limited (LTI) proporcionó vehículos para ayudar con las modificaciones estructurales necesarias en el chasis de los taxis. El sistema de célula de combustible de Intelligent Energy ha sido integrado en el último modelo LTI TX4 de taxi, y encaja en el vehículo sin invadir el espacio del portaequipajes. La idea es que este nuevo taxi sea introducido a tiempo para las Olimpiadas de 2012. Antes de que acabe este año Transportes de Londres empezará a operar 5 autobuses con célula de hidrógeno, y el alcalde de la ciudad, Boris Johnson, se ha comprometido a trabajar con los fabricantes para conseguir que todos los taxis de Londres emitan cero emisiones para 2020.
